Perception of Depression in Pakistani Adults
Did anything bad happen to you or someone you know in the last 2 weeks? Did you feel DEPRESSED because of it? You might say yes but are you sure that was Depression? Term Depression is used frequently nowadays, people get sad and start calling it depression unaccompanied by the fact that depression is a serious mental illness that can be life-altering. A recent study divulged that most Pakistanis perceive depression as normal daily life sadness and one can easily snap out of it whenever they want but as a matter of fact, snapping out of it is beyond one’s control. A person cannot get away without proper psychotherapy and medicines but dismally, we don’t understand the severity of this disease and collate it with our daily life sadness. Daily life stressors are not the genesis of depression. It takes a lot more than this. Mental health professionals are trying their best to generate awareness about depression but people in our country are resistant to present-day information. Despite living in an era of smart phone and zoom meetings, Mental illness is still a taboo that people still hesitate while talking about and the response they get is the foremost reason they don’t talk about it.
