- DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE
An Immotral Film!
‘DDLJ’ is An Immortal Film! It’s among those “FINE” films, that remain perfect forever. It’s among those gems, that can never go dated. Be it the direction, the screenplay, the songs, the performances, the cinematography…everything just gets better!
‘DDLJ’ Synopsis: A young man and woman – both of Indian-descent, but born and raised in England – fall in love during a trip to Switzerland. However, the girl’s traditional father takes her back to India to fulfill a betrothal promise.
‘DDLJ’, even if not so hugely successful, it still would have gained a cult-following. Aditya Chopra’s Screenplay is engaging, moving & most importantly entertaining. The Love-Story works big time, so do the characters & the situations. Cinematography by Manmohan Singh is picture perfect. Editing is smooth. Chopra’s direction is sensitive. Music by Jatin-Lalit, is fabulous.
Shahrukh’s performance as Raj, became a rage & catapulted him into Superstardom. He is lovable as Raj. Kajol as Simran, is fantastic, as always. The Chemistry between Shahrukh & Kajol, is infectious. Amrish Puri, however, steals the show as the traditional Indian father. The late legend delivers an incredible performance, that truly leaves you in awe of him. Farida Jalal is first-rate. Anupam Kher is great. Parmeet Sethi plays the bad-guy well. Satish Shah is decent, while Mandira Bedi is passable. Others are perfect.
- BORDER
Revolving around the Longewala Post in west Rajhastan during the war of 1971 between India and Pakistan, this movie unusually tied reality to Bollywood and brought through a message that could and should be understood by most people. Not much can be said about the story without revealing the whole plot. No doubt, the story is brilliant. A story writer could not have come up with a better story fitting the characters in mind, the stars who played them and the plot at the same time. Basically, many young men, including Dharmveer (Akshaye Khanna) and a Raja of Rajhastan (Sunil Shetty) come together to fight a war with their battalion leader, Kuldeep Singh (Sunny Deol). They wait patiently as war develops and tell stories about their lives, their family, their children, their girlfriends, fiancees, etc…Fighting dreams and relationships, they realize that they are putting up their lives up for their motherland. Nothing, not even their children, wives, mothers or any other part of their family are more valuable than their own land. Slowly the whole battalion comes together during their stay at the post. War breaks out at the border, as tanks and soilders surround the post. The battalion must hold on the whole night onto their post until the Air Force (commanded by Jackie Shroff´s character) can strike the approaching offensive. Malik´s music and the cinematography of them were on par with the rest of the movie. All of the four songs, “Ke Ghar Kab Aao Ge” and “Hamen Jab Se Mohobaat” are excellent, and “Mere Dushman Mere Bhai” is out of this world
- KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is a beautifully directed and well made film. For the first time we see love triangles to drive the story. The film was unique in not having violence or a villain and guess what it worked beautifully and wasn’t needed. A first for Indian Cinema that is used to applying the same techniques and formula. The plot, cast and songs are exceptional. Everyone hits it out of the park.
This was Karan Johar’s film debut and took the film world by storm with this well made film. Beside having a meaningful love story, it ended well and gave a lot of closure to the audience. The humor also pours out easily as does the drama, the film alternates well between these two. We see a great love story that was meant to be and learn of noble characters who make decisions for the greater good.
- ANDAZ APNA APNA
Raveena Bajaj is an heiress from London who has come to India looking for a man. Amar and Prem are two of the many men trying to make a match. Both slackers are from working class families. The two lying rivals join forces to get rid of the other suitors. Raveena’s father’s secret twin also has a scheme to get the family fortune.
This is an old fashion screwball comedy from Bollywood. It has the broad vaudevillian comedy with the prerequisite song and dance. Aamir Khan and Salman Khan are both charismatic performing fools. Their madcap antics are light fun. It’s the broadest of comedy in the old fashion sense and one can feel the fun.
- BAAZIGAR
Anu Malik’s melodious score and Abbas -Mustan’s slick direction deserve due credit but Baazigar was all about SRK and the fantastic way in which he portrayed the dual characters.
The story Is beyond fantastic about Ajay (Shah Rukh Khan) who steals the hearts of Seema (Shilpa Shetty) and Priya (Kajol) the daughters of his greatest enemy Madan Chopra (Dilip Tahil). Years ago, Madan Chopra snatched away Ajay’s family business and property. Now Ajay is grown up and has come back to avenge the death of his father and baby sister. But Ajay didn’t plan on falling in love with one of chopra’s daughters. Will he forsake all for his love? Or will he forsake his love for the sake of his family? This blockbuster hit will definitely keep you riveted to your seat. It is simply SRH’s and Abbas-Mustan’s best film ever. Shilpa Shetty was introduced but also SRK and Kajol have appeared for the first time together and they are a landmark couple of Bollywood. The movie also has excellent comedy mainly by Johnny Lever that is still funny. Music is also good and the best songs are Baazigar oh Baazigar & Yeh Kali Kali Aankhen.
- HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN
At a time when action films were the norm of Indian Cinema came a family film called “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun”. A film that broke all the records at the time. It was the turning point in Indian Cinema to move away from violent films and towards more romantic and creative efforts or as I like to call them “Films without Villains”.
Hum Aapke Hain Kaun started it all. The film is directed by Sooraj Barjatya, it is his second film after Maine Pyaar Kiya. HAHK stars Salman Khan as Prem and Madhuri Dixit as Pooja, its about how they fall in love and what they have to go through to finally end up together, throw in some family values and emotion and you have Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.
- GHAYAL
Ghayal is arguably Rajkumar Santoshi’s best film. The film although classified as an action film. The film is in fact a revenge drama with Sunny Doel as the avenger and Amraish Puri as the villain. The film is well executed and keeps you on the edge of your seat. For an Indian film it is stylishly shot and for an action film it has a very good story which is quite emotional at times such as in the court room scenes. The songs are hummable and fit in well in the context of the film.
The film has you rooting for Sunny Doel in his quest for revenge with the whole system against him. Sunny Doel is excellent in his national award-winning performance. Menakshi is also very good as his supportive girlfriend. While Raj Babbar and Moushami provide adequate support as Sunny’s family. Om Puri is good and makes an impact in a small role of a good cop in a corrupt system. While Amraish Puri proves why he is one of the best villains ever to hit the big screen.
This film is well-directed, has a good story and performances and is well-worth watching. It may be noted Santoshi went on to make other good films such as Damani and Ghatak with the same principle star-cast however this remains his best film to date.
We hope this list has already got you nostalgic and excited all at once. Binge on your favorite movie over the weekend or to hush away the blues, be it any reason enjoy watching your favorite movie from our list of 90s.
