Anum Bashir

There’s something really interesting about engaging in fashion in a way that isn’t defined by price tag,” says Anum Bashir on the phone from Dubai. “It’s fine to love Prada or Chanel and Kenzo, but I’m about mixing the high and low — making an active, conscious decision to go out and try to support new brands.” As the founder of Desert Mannequin, which has become one of the biggest fashion blogs in the Middle East, Bashir’s commitment to that idea comes through in all she does: She’s equally effusive when discussing the unorthodox designs of JW Anderson and Dries Van Noten or sharing the best stores in her adopted hometown.

After studying journalism at Carnegie Mellon and embarking on a successful career in the art world at Qatar Museums, Bashir felt ready to explore fashion as more than a hobby. Desert Mannequin arrived at a time when there were relatively few bloggers in the Middle East. Though social media influencers were plentiful, Bashir’s site occupies a unique niche with its vibrant editorials and long-form content featuring relatable subjects.
